Frequently Asked Questions

Medical oncology is a sub-speciality of internal medicine that covers the diagnosis and treatment of cancer using drug therapies such as chemotherapy, targeted therapy and immunotherapy.

Immunotherapy is a treatment method that activates the immune system, enabling it to recognise and destroy cancer cells. It can produce effective results, particularly in lung, breast and head and neck cancers.

Targeted therapies are administered using drugs that selectively target cancer cells, based on the tumour’s genetic and molecular characteristics; they are preferred for patients with specific molecular alterations.

Genetic profiling of the tumour helps to establish a personalised treatment plan by identifying the most suitable targeted therapy or immunotherapy option for the patient.

The side effects of chemotherapy vary depending on the drug used, the dose and the patient’s general state of health; effects such as nausea, fatigue, hair loss and a drop in blood counts may occur, and patients are closely monitored throughout the course of treatment.

In the treatment of breast cancer, depending on the stage and tumour subtype, surgery, chemotherapy, targeted therapy, immunotherapy and hormone therapy may be used either in combination or separately.

In non-small cell lung cancer, immunotherapy—either on its own or in combination with chemotherapy—is an important treatment option that improves treatment outcomes in suitable patients.

The duration of treatment varies depending on the type and stage of cancer and the chosen treatment protocol; whilst some treatments last a few months, certain targeted therapy or immunotherapy regimens may continue as long-term maintenance therapy.

Seeking a second opinion following a cancer diagnosis provides the patient with reassurance and is recommended as a means of confirming the accuracy of the treatment plan and assessing the latest treatment options.

In some types of cancer, a family history or genetic predisposition may increase the risk; genetic counselling and regular screening are recommended for individuals with a family history of cancer.

Bringing any previous test results, pathology reports and a list of the medicines you are taking with you before your appointment will help speed up the assessment.
